I’ve written many, many times about the overwhelming appeal Marvel Comics had for me as a kid, including a previous acknowledgement of the burning need to respond I felt whenever I encountered one of the regular appearances of a house ad beckoning me to subscribe. There are several of those popping pitches that have taken up permanent residence in my memory. Among them is the colorful page that called for impressionable readers to “ENROLL IN THE MARVEL SUBSCRIBER’S CLUB!” Beyond the rambunctious energy in its design, I think this specific ad grabbed me because it spoke to the fundamental draw of the culture put forward by the publisher. In buying and collecting their comic books, I truly did feel like I was gaining entry to a crew of discerning devotees of the most scintillating superhero saga of them all. I longed to be in that club.
