This Week’s Model — St. Vincent, “Broken Man”

“Broken Man,” the latest track from St. Vincent, is spectacular. Just as I would hope at this stage in her career, the cut pulls together strands from all portions of her career to date — including the lush art rock of her self-titled album, the icy pop of Masseduction, and the thumping funk of Daddy’s Home — to twist together a thick sonic rope. The repeated cry of “What are you looking at?” has a Talking Heads–like repetitive tension that calls to mind her collaboration with David Byrne. It’s a song that arrives like a bazooka blast, signally that Annie Clark is once again ready to take every perception about what she can do and forcibly turn it inside out.

All Born Screaming, the new album from St. Vincent, is scheduled for release in April.
