This Week’s Model — Sunflower Bean, “Nothing Romantic”

I will cop to a woozy susceptibility for the flashy, clashy brand of pop rock doled out by the Brooklyn trip Sunflower Bean. The new single burrows yet deeper into my weak spots, calling up a certain bygone era when singles were big and brash and anthemic, all the better to be accompanied by a music video that has an ample wind machine budget and to reach the distant corners of stadiums when played live. It sounds like something that might have been produced had Juliana Hatfield decided to emulate Heart in their hair spray and bustier days. I don’t know if that should work, but it does for me. Add to that lyrics that fling scorn at the concept of the tortured artist and Roger Joseph Manning Jr. of Jellyfish helping out with some ivory tickling. It’s like the track is genetically engineered to hold my attention.

Mortal Primetime, the new album from Sunflower Bean, is scheduled for release in April.
