Already fairly spare in their sonic approach, it stood to reason that Big Thief would skew even airier following the departure of Max Oleartchik. Instead, the band’s new single, “Incomprehensible,” has a lithe, electronic groove that calls to mind Beth Orton. It’s hardly bombastic disco, bit the track moves with more authority than the gentle-stream drift that is Big Thief’s default mode.
Despite this shimmery wrinkle, the remaining trio of Adrianne Lenker, Buck Meek, and James Krivchenia clearly assert that Big Thief is going to remain the same confident, thoughtful, intricately attentive band they’ve always been. Lenker intones lyrics about aging with bountiful grace and self-assurance: “So let gravity be my sculptor, let the wind do my hair/ Let me dance in front of people without a care.” It’s tender-hearted and exquisite.
Double Infinity, the new album from Big Thief, is scheduled for release in September.
