This Week’s Model — Billy Bragg, “Put Christ Back Into Christmas”

In a yuletide tradition as dependable as the adorning of trees, a right-wing crackpot in the U.K. has loudly commandeered the discourse to lament secular celebrations of the Christmas holiday. Of course, it’s all a cynical act. Those who are the loudest and angriest about the supposed absence of religious respect during the holiday season are also common proponents of political views that are in direct opposition to the most fundamental teachings of Jesus Christ. This year, the Bard of Barking is striking back with his most potent weapons: his guitar, his words, his voice.

Billy Bragg goes into the whole situation in greater depth on his social media, and it’s worth a read. Befitting his place as one of the most stalwart carriers of Woody Guthrie’s torch, the song he sings is a potent argument all on its own:

Should Christ come back today
If he were forced to choose a side
I tell you without doubt
That he’d embrace the refugee
And cast the fascist out

“Put Christ Back Into Christmas” is the only carol I need this year.
