It’s been six long years since Temple, the last album from Thao and the Get Down Stay Down. Around a year after that release, Thao Nguyen announced the band was breaking up. A solo career for Thao seemed inevitable. The wait began.

There were flares of promise along the way, including the fine single “Fossils” earlier this summer. This week, the Thao solo era got its proper unveiling. To accompany the announcement that a new full-length is on the way, Thao released “Sick of the Times.” It’s everything I want in a Thao track: percussive, inventive, and sung with a confident power that suggests a predator ripping into its prey. In a perfect alignment of artists, Tune-Yards guests on the track and co-produces. The Linda Lindas are also on hand toi compound the cool.

Show Me, the new album from Thao, is scheduled for release in October.
