“5 Card Stud,” the new single from GracieHorse, is something special. Built on a country-rock groove that’s both easygoing and propulsive, the song is like something Waxahatchee might come up with if she was moved by the spirit of Christine McVie’s pop sensibility. The lyrics play around with poker terminology (“Call that bluff/ Bad beat pass one/ All that action/ Buy in or crack this 5 card stud”) without ever feeling gimmicky. In GracieHorse’s rendering, it’s just another way to make sense of the world.

The new album from GracieHorse, Breaking and Entering, is scheduled for release in January.
