This series of posts is dedicated to the many, many six packs, pony kegs and pints that have sauntered into my life at one point or another.

I am mindful of the fact that the last couple years have been difficult for small businesses, so there’s extra pleasure to be had in crossing the threshold of one of the passion-project craft breweries that stand as centerpieces of a small towns. Hillsboro, Wisconsin has fewer than two thousand residents, but it also has a family-owned brewery with an impressive flight of beers and a beautiful facility in a building that was previously devoted to processing both milk and mink. I can easily imagine a lovely time curled into the corner of one of their massive booths, sipping the afternoon away with pint after pint of the Contented Cow milk stout. In the rolling hills of America’s Dairyland, it tasted like home.
