Shilpa Ray has never struck me as an artist who is reticent about sharing her heated thoughts. Her new single, “Lawsuits and Suicide,” takes aim at a former abusive partner who followed the adhered to the common pattern of greeting every attempt at ceasing the relationship with the high-drama threats cited in the song’s title: “Lawsuits and suicide/ Then it was lawsuits and no suicide?/ What made you change your mind?/ Were those the best threats you could come up with to destroy me?” Backed by zingy synths, Ray delivers the lyrics in a purring bellow that conveys that whatever wounds she’s got have completely healed and only made her stronger.
Ray’s new album, Portrait of a Lady, is scheduled for release at the end of April.
