“Nothing (In My Head),” the new track from the Baltimore band Pinkshift, is a bazooka. In press material accompanying the release, the band explains that the song is about feeling trapping and longing for escape. The annotation is hardly necessary, because the fervor of the feeling in right there, in the pummeling rhythm, the blazing guitar solo, and the primal-vocals of Ashrita Kumar. When she sings, “I feel so goddamn numb/ I can’t stay trapped inside this box much longer oh no,” I can almost hear it being shouted in unison by a massive crowd of simpatico souls pogoing away their dissatisfaction. And deep down in my soul, I want to be in that number.
