It was recently announced that Julia Jacklin, the Australian singer-songwriter who’s released three increasingly acclaimed albums over the past ten years, signed to 4AD for her next release. That choice strikes me as just right. The label that once struck me as primarily a home for dreamy, drifty acts (having Cocteau Twins as a centerpiece artist will do that) has long prioritized sharp, inventive songwriting that is produced on the spare side. Jacklin should be labelmates with U.S. Girls, the National, and the Big Thief gang. Her new single, “Get Away From Me (I Think I’ll Love You Soon),” fits right in. It’s a light, lovely indie-folk song that virtually gleams.
The Gem, the new album from Julia Jacklin, is scheduled for release in September.
