Olivia Rodrigo keeps using her pop stardom for good. Drawing inspiration from Lilith Fair, Rodrigo is the driving force behind Daisy Chain Fields, a daylong music festival that will be staged in Irvine, California this weekend and features an incredible lineup of women and women-led artists. Bikini Kill, Mitski, the Breeders, and Rodrigo herself are on the bill for this inaugural edition of the event. Importantly, the concert will raise funds for groups that are intensely needed at this broken moment in our culture. Rodrigo says the following in a statement:

Net proceeds from the festival are directed toward nonprofit organizations dedicated to advancing and advocating for women and girls. Beyond its philanthropic impact, Daisy Chain’s core purpose is to cultivate joy and shared understanding, creating space for meaningful moments of connection across generations and communities.

Daisies are wild and beautiful. As a chain, they are strong and unbreakable.

Rodrigo offers further support to the cause with the release of the new track “serena joy.” Written at around the same time as other songs on her dandy new album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, “serena joy” is named after a character in Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale whose complicity with a totalitarian regime doesn’t protect her from the misogynistic wrath of that insidious power (“Sing along, sing along/ What they tell you to do/ Comin’ ’round, comin’ ’round/ Comin’ around the corner/ If they do it to them/ They’ll do it to you”). The song’s sentiment is timely, and its sound is sleek and spiky.
