Please bask in the hazy glow of Flower Face ushering any and all heartfelt, attentive listeners into the full-Phoebe era of indie rock. I type that sentence knowing that it’s not entirely fair. Ruby McKinnon has been releasing music as Flower Face for well over a decade, and the new album she just announced, Kill the Muse, will be her seventh full-length studio effort. She’s way ahead of Bridgers in terms on longevity and output.
Even so, I think there’s no denying that the new Flower Face single, “Better the Devil,” would nestle up nicely against any of the most beloved, melancholy tracks from the recent weekend loser. With lines such as “All my friends are getting sober/ I guess that means that I’m drinking alone,” Flower Face nails the wry world-weariness that gets arenas full of skeleton-adorned adherents singing along through their tears. I’m not arguing that Flower Face is derivative, just that she is deserving of her own pockets of outsized devotion. “Better the Devil” is proof of that.
Kill the Muse is scheduled for release in February.
